Cultivating the organization habit is a lifelong practice. Here are 9 cornerstones of organization to visit weekly. The Practice: 1) Write It Down: Pen and paper, smartphone, tablet use them to write down every single thing. The to-do items, the wondering items get them all on an ongoing list. You’ll see why later. In the meantime it's an effective way of keeping/creating records and organizing your mind. 2) Schedule It On Your Calendar And Give It A Due Date: Organization and productivity are directly related to each other. As you list tasks schedule reasonable appointment times on your calendar to make specific progress on those tasks. Set reminders for these appointments. Set due dates with reminders for the tasks. 3) Now Is The Time To List And Schedule: List it on your task list and schedule time to address it on your calendar now while it's on your mind. 4) Physical Storing, Labeling And Easy Access Spaces: These are the 3 hallmarks of the organized physical environment. If you are just getting started schedule 15 minutes 3-5 times a week to address organizing your physical space. Start by designating small sections to address one at a time. 5) Maintenance, Organization And Cleaning Up Regularly: Step 5 you already learned in kindergarten. Put things where they belong. Clean up the mess you made. 6) The Challenge Of Getting “Feng Shui” With It: I call this one the cleaner than clean principle. It's the practice of making accessible what you need when you need it and that's it. Have you ever walked into a space and thought wow this stuff is cleaner than clean how'd that happen? Take mental notes on those spaces. Everything is in its space and whatever is needed for the task at hand is handy. Obviously sorting out and preparation are the mainstay of this practice organizational habit. 7) Give Yourself A Break: If you are just now getting into the habits of organization truly give yourself a break now and then. Do what you can when you can and call the rest a good work in progress. Just practice knowing when it's time to take out the trash and the recycling. That's a reasonable place to start. 8) Shopping Lists And Budgets: Statistically people that make their most reasonable shopping list before they go to the store and stick to that shopping list throughout the store experience get what they need and nothing more. 9) Delegation, Responsibility And Effort: By the time you arrive at step number 9 you have at least 1 if not a few lists going. Look at your big to-do list. Find 1 thing that can be either organized out delegated to a part of another project in progress or integrated into the flowchart of other tasks. Sometimes you'll even find a task or two that really don't need to be addressed anyway. The sum total is more free time for you and less effort exerted over all. In summary these are organizational practice habits, routines, moments. In other words, you don't have to be rigid with the practice points. Simply give them a try when practice time comes around.
